Indian American among 11 Supreme Court judges appointed by California Governor Newsom

Mehtab Sandhu, a seasoned legal professional, will serve in the Orange County Superior Court, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Steven Bromberg.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the appointment of 11 Superior Court Judges across various counties, including the historic inclusion of Indian American Mehtab Sandhu.

The appointments, made public on Dec.13, encompass judgeships in Fresno County, Kern County, Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Bernardino County, San Diego County, and an interim role in Santa Clara County.

Mehtab Sandhu, a seasoned legal professional, will serve in the Orange County Superior Court, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Steven Bromberg. Sandhu has an extensive legal background, having served as an Assistant City Attorney at the City of Anaheim City Attorney’s Office since 2022.

Previously, he held the position of Deputy City Attorney – Community Prosecutor in Anaheim from 2021 to 2022 and served as Deputy District Attorney at the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office from 2012 to 2021. Sandhu began his career as an Associate at Bernstein, Litowitz, Berger & Grossman in 2012.

Sandhu holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law and identifies as a Democrat.

The other newly appointed judges include María G. Díaz (Fresno County), Keenan Perkins (Kern County), Jeffery McFarland, Safaan K. Ahmed, and Michael Cavalluzzi (Los Angeles County), Amber Poston (Orange County), Christopher Hayes (San Bernardino County), Lizbet Muñoz and Roy Lai (San Diego County), and Johnene Stebbins (Santa Clara County, interim).

Each judge will receive a compensation of $244,727, reflecting the significance and responsibility of their roles in California's judicial system.
