Nandan Kumar Mondal, an assistant professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, has been awarded the 2024 American Heart Association (AHA) Innovative Research Award for his work in cardiovascular medicine.

The award, which provides $200,000 over two years, recognizes Mondal’s project titled “MasSpec Pen for Real-Time Non-Invasive Assessment of Ischemic Injury in Human Hearts for DCD Transplantation”, which aims to advance donor heart transplantation by utilizing the MasSpec Pen technology to assess myocardial injury and monitor donor heart quality in real-time.

Collaborating with Livia Eberlin and Kenneth Liao, his research focuses on hearts donated after circulatory death (DCD). This method seeks to increase the donor pool while ensuring precision and safety in heart transplantation.

The potential for real-time, non-invasive assessment of ischemic injury could significantly improve the evaluation process, offering a transformative approach to transplantation medicine.

Mondal holds a BSc and MSc from The University of Burdwan, West Bengal, an MPhil from The University of Burdwan, a PhD from Jadavpur University via Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, and postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Louisville School of Medicine.
