After Pennsylvania, push for Diwali state holiday in Massachusetts
Indian-American community leaders in Massachusetts are advocating for similar recognition.

Inspired by Pennsylvania's recent recognition of Diwali as an official state holiday, Indian-American leaders in Massachusetts, led by Anand Sharma, are working to gain the same acknowledgment in their state.
Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro recently signed Senate Bill 402, making Diwali an official state holiday. Known as the Hindu Festival of Lights, Diwali will be celebrated from Oct. 29 to November 3, with the main day on Oct. 31.
In 2023, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a law making Diwali a school holiday for New York City public schools.
Sharma, through a growing change.org petition, is gathering support from Indian Americans and other residents, urging Massachusetts lawmakers to acknowledge Diwali as a state holiday.
The petition emphasizes Diwali's importance for Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, celebrating the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. “This initiative aims to bring awareness and foster inclusion for the thousands of Indian Americans who call Massachusetts home,” Sharma stated.
Recognizing Diwali as a state holiday, he added, would honor the state’s diverse cultural contributions.
Community members are optimistic that Massachusetts will follow Pennsylvania’s lead, marking a significant step toward inclusivity and cultural acknowledgment in state observances.
