Three members of the Samosa Caucus – Representatives Pramila Jayapal, Ami Bera, and Suhas Subramanyam – shared concerns as President Donald Trump was inaugurated for his second term on Jan.20.

Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee, issued a strong statement in response to President Trump's executive orders on immigration. Jayapal, a staunch advocate for immigrant rights, decried the actions taken on day one of Trump’s administration.

“Despite campaigning to lower costs for working families, address the housing crisis, tackle the extraordinary levels of economic inequality in this country, and tamp down on inflation, Trump’s day one executive orders do none of that," she said.

Jayapal continued, condemning Trump's immigration policies: “The Executive Orders that nominally ‘secure the border’ will only create more chaos and disorder at the Southern border and eliminate programs that were proven successful. Plans for sweeping bans on immigration will have major negative impacts on our economy, make it impossible to prioritize serious threats for enforcement, undermine safety and security, and stoke xenophobia to divide us.”

Jayapal also expressed her opposition to Trump's efforts to end birthright citizenship, calling it unconstitutional: “This is unconstitutional and cannot be done with the stroke of a pen. If enacted, it would make a mockery of our country’s laws and the precedents set in the Constitution.”

In closing, Jayapal pledged to continue her fight for immigrant families: “Over the next four years, I will do everything in my power to protect immigrant families. We must work toward an immigration system that is orderly, fair, and humane while providing real security at the border instead of stoking division and fear.”

Ami Bera (D-CA) took to social media to express his commitment to the democratic process and the ongoing work of the government, despite the controversial election outcome. In a post on X, he wrote, “I am at the inauguration to uphold the sacred American tradition of the peaceful transfer of power. I acknowledge that this outcome is not what many hoped for. However, the work of improving the lives of the American people must continue.

“I will continue working with Democrats and Republicans alike to lower costs, keep our communities safe, and deliver results for SacramentoCounty,” he added.

Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) shared his own lighthearted but reflective take on the day through a video posted on X, recorded with his wife Miranda. In the video, Subramanyam acknowledged the significance of the inauguration, noting, “Today is the swearing in ceremony of President Donald Trump. And we are here because we believe in the peaceful transition of power.”

In an earlier tweet, he wrote: “Welcome to Loudoun and enjoy the fireworks tonight @realDonaldTrump! There will be plenty of more fireworks if there's an attempt to relocate agencies away from our region and fire federal workers en mass. But enjoy tonight!”
