As multiple wildfires continue to rage across California, leaving devastation in their wake, several Indian American organizations have stepped up to provide aid and resources to affected communities.

The wildfires, which have consumed nearly 28,000 acres, have claimed at least five lives and destroyed hundreds of homes, prompting the evacuation of more than 100,000 residents.

California wildfires are an annual crisis driven by a combination of dry conditions, high winds, and climate change, often resulting in significant loss of life, property damage, and mass evacuations. The current blaze has been particularly destructive around Los Angeles, with emergency services stretched thin.

In response to this ongoing crisis, Indian American organizations are actively contributing to relief efforts:

  1. Jain Center, Buena Park: The Jain Center has opened its doors to offer temporary shelter to those in need during this challenging time. Community members seeking refuge can reach the center at 714-742-2304.

  2. Pasadena Hindu Temple: Located at 676 S Rosemead Ave, Pasadena, the temple is providing food and assistance to those who have evacuated or are facing power outages. Individuals can visit the temple for meals or contact Pandit Ji via WhatsApp at 626-679-8777 for further support.

  3. United Sikhs: The United Sikhs organization, in collaboration with local Gurdwaras, is providing essential aid to families displaced by the wildfires. Those seeking assistance can contact the UMEED Helpline at +1-855-US-UMEED (+1-855-878-6333).

  4. LA 211 and Airbnb Collaboration: LA 211 has partnered with Airbnb to offer free housing for up to one week for evacuees, including those in the Palisades area. Residents can dial 211 or visit www.211la.org for more information.

For real-time updates and safety measures, residents can access the California wildfire map and tracker, displaying active fire incidents and hotspots across the state, at California Wildfire Map. The Watch Duty App, a nonprofit wildfire-tracking service, also provides crucial alerts and information.

As relief efforts continue, these organizations urge community members to stay alert and safe, emphasizing the importance of solidarity during these trying times.
