Indian-American Hiya Ghosh wins 2024 EngineerGirl Writing Contest
She is declared the winner in the Elementary Grade category in a contest hosted by the prestigious National Academy of Engineering.

Hiya Ghosh, a third-grader at Eagle Point Elementary School in Oakdale, Minnesota, has been declared the winner of the 2024 EngineerGirl Writing Contest in the Elementary Grade category. This nationwide contest is hosted by the prestigious National Academy of Engineering (NAE).
The National Academy of Engineering announced the winners of its 2024 EngineerGirl Writing Contest on June.11. This year’s competition asked students in elementary through high school to write an essay exploring the lifecycle of an object used in daily life. The prompt, "The Secret Life of Everyday Items," asked students to focus on the specific contributions and roles of engineers throughout the process of transforming raw materials into consumer products. Prizes were awarded based on grade level.
Students wrote essays exploring the lifecycle of an object used in daily life and the types of engineering involved along the way. Ghosh’s winning essay is titled "Toothpaste Engineering is Super Exciting!"
As the first prize winner, Ghosh will receive a $1,000 check. “These students skillfully showcased the key roles that engineers play throughout all processes of innovation, from design to development to implementation,” said NAE President John L Anderson.
In May 2024, Ghosh was also declared as the Minnesota State Winner for the 2024 "Doodle for Google" contest. / EngineerGirl is an initiative aimed at encouraging girls in elementary through high school to consider engineering careers. The program offers information about engineering fields, answers to questions, interviews with engineers, and various other resources. Surveys indicate that 40 percent of participants are more likely to consider an engineering career after participating in the contest. This initiative is part of the NAE’s efforts to increase diversity within the engineering workforce.
In May 2024, Ghosh was also declared as the Minnesota State Winner for the 2024 "Doodle for Google" contest. She is one of the 55 US State and Territory Winners for her doodle, "Electric Flying Cars." Her entry reflects her wish for the next 25 years to see zero pollution and flying cars, aiming for a world with less traffic and pollution.
