Duke University has awarded Indian-American mathematician Samit Dasgupta the title of James B. Duke Distinguished Professor in the department of mathematics. He is among 31 faculty members honored with distinguished professorships this year.
The university will recognize the recipients at a ceremony on May.14 at the Washington Duke Inn. These prestigious titles are given to faculty who have significantly contributed to their fields and demonstrated excellence in research and teaching.
Duke’s distinguished professors will officially assume their new roles on Jul.1.
"I am very proud to recognize these outstanding faculty colleagues," said Duke University president Vincent E. Price in an announcement on Mar.25. "Through their extraordinary scholarship and teaching, they are advancing solutions, inventions, and cures that will uplift humankind and make a lasting difference in the world."
Dasgupta specializes in algebraic number theory, focusing on explicitly constructing units in number fields and points on abelian varieties. His work has contributed to major mathematical conjectures, including those of Stark, Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer, and Beilinson.
He also explores refinements beyond the traditional scope of L-functions, using modular forms and Galois representations to gain new insights.
Dasgupta has received multiple research grants, including:
- National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant** (2023-2028) for the RTG: Linked via the L-functions project.
- NSF Research Grant (2022-2027) for studying the Brumer-Stark Conjecture and its refinements.
