Indian American president of the University of Arizona (U of A), Suresh Garimella led a academic exchange from Nov. 14 to 16, hosting a delegation of vice chancellors and leadership teams from the Confederation of Indian Private Universities (CIPU). The visit aimed to strengthen ties between U of A and India’s leading private universities.
Garimella, who also chairs the CIPU International Advisory Council, welcomed the delegation alongside Jenny Lee, vice president for Arizona International, and Caleb Simmons, executive director of online education. The event featured discussions on U of A’s governance, research excellence, strategic budgeting, and global partnerships, as well as campus tours of facilities like the Applied Research Building and the Richard F. Caris Mirror Laboratory.
“This visit is just the beginning,” Garimella said. “I've been proud to serve on this council, and I'm a longtime believer in the importance of collaboration between higher education institutions. I'm pleased to see the University of Arizona shares this commitment, which promises to create greater opportunities as we strengthen global connections and work toward shared academic goals."
The delegation also explored advanced education technology, faculty development strategies, and student success programs. A highlight of the visit was their attendance at a U of A football game against the University of Houston, further deepening the cultural exchange.
Garimella, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, India, holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from IIT Madras, an M.S. from Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. As a former president of the University of Vermont and an executive leader at Purdue University, Garimella has consistently championed international collaboration. His leadership at U of A is marked by initiatives that bridge American and Indian higher education
The CIPU, which represents over 70 private universities in India, collaborates with governments and academic leaders to influence education policy. This exchange is expected to pave the way for joint research initiatives, student exchanges, and innovative projects between U of A and CIPU member institutions.
