The US Senate confirmed Indian American Sharad Desai as a district judge for the District of Arizona in a decisive bipartisan vote on Nov.21, marking a significant milestone for the Phoenix-based attorney.

Desai, currently vice president and general counsel for Honeywell International’s Integrated Supply Chain and Information Technology Divisions, received an overwhelming 82-12 vote in the Senate.

Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, an independent, praised Desai’s qualifications, stating, “He represents the very best of the Arizona legal community. He possesses the experience, integrity, and intellect to serve honorably as a federal judge in the US District Court for the District of Arizona.”

Sinema also took credit for securing the strong bipartisan backing for Desai’s confirmation. “I’m proud to personally secure his strong, bipartisan confirmation by the US Senate with a vote of 82-12,” she said in a press release.

Desai’s appointment stands out among the judicial nominees considered by the Senate this week. Unlike many others, whose confirmations narrowly passed with votes along party lines, Desai received the highest vote tally.

Desai is also the brother of Judge Roopali Desai, who serves on the US Court of Appeals, further cementing the family’s contributions to the American judiciary.

Earlier this year, the Senate confirmed two other Arizonans, Angela Martinez and Krissa Lanham, as federal judges, both with 66 votes. Sinema championed all three appointments, underscoring her commitment to strengthening Arizona’s judiciary.
