An Indian American man was fatally shot in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood on the night of April 16.

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Kevin Patel. The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. in the 800 block of West Lill Avenue, a typically quiet residential area.

Patel was discovered lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he succumbed to the injuries.

According to media reports, a local resident Garrett Moores heard the gunshot and found Patel outside his neighbor’s home. He attempted to contain the bleeding with towels and called 911, assisted by two others. Moores said Patel was breathing and responsive en route to the hospital.

According to witnesses, a man and a woman were seen fleeing the scene on foot towards the east. No arrests have been made, and the motive remains unknown. A package and a sweatshirt were reportedly found near the scene, and the area was cordoned off by police.

Chicago Police said the investigation is being led by Belmont Area detectives. A special roll call was conducted in the area on April 16, and police presence has since been increased. Authorities have asked anyone with information to come forward.

Residents expressed shock, noting that the neighborhood is usually regarded as safe.

The case has renewed concerns about public safety and gun violence in U.S. cities. According to the Pew Research Center, the U.S. recorded approximately 47,000 gun-related deaths in 2021, including 17,000 homicides—rates significantly higher than those in most developed countries.
