Indian-American tennis prodigy Nishesh Basavareddy is set to take on 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the first round of the Australian Open, scheduled on Jan.13.

Basavareddy turned professional in late 2024 after a string of strong performances, including qualifying for the Next Gen ATP Finals. Although he finished last in the group stages, his journey to the tournament showcased his growing potential.

His notable achievements on the ATP Challenger circuit last year include winning the Puerto Vallarta Open in November 2024, reaching the finals at the Challenger Campaign, and advancing to the semifinals in Knoxville.

This week, 19-year-old Basavareddy competed in the ASB Classic, where he delivered impressive victories against higher-seeded players, including Botic van de Zandschulp and Alejandro Tabilo, before losing to Gael Monfils in the semifinals. As of Jan. 6, he holds a career-high ATP singles ranking of 133.

Born in Newport Beach, California, in 2005, Basavareddy comes from a family originally from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India. Standing at 5 feet 11 inches, the Stanford University student trains under former U.S. tennis player Bryan Smith.

Facing Djokovic, who is vying for a record 25th Grand Slam title, will be a significant challenge for the teenager.
