Indian American wins Academy of American Poets’ Most Promising Young Poet award

The award, which honors student poets under the age of 23, includes a US$1,000 prize and publication on Poets.org.

Tejaswini Sudhakar, an Indian American graduate student at Indiana University Bloomington, has been awarded the Aliki Perroti and Seth Frank Most Promising Young Poet Award by the Academy of American Poets. 

Sudhakar, who is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree in Poetry, was selected for the award after her submission for Indiana University’s Vera Strube Meyer Award, was automatically entered into the national competition. "I didn’t even know I had entered," Sudhakar said. "This is an incredible honor and a wonderful surprise."

Ross Gay, a professor of English at Indiana University, praised Sudhakar’s achievement. “The list of past recipients of this award is truly remarkable. Teja is an exceptional poet and a person with a big heart,” he said.

Sudhakar, originally from Chennai, India, grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, and discovered a passion for poetry during her school years. Her undergraduate thesis, Looking for Smoke, focused on the experiences of first-generation migrant women in Kentucky and was described by Sudhakar as a deeply personal project.

The Aliki Perroti and Seth Frank Most Promising Young Poet Award was established in 2013 to highlight emerging voices in poetry. It includes includes a US$1,000 prize and publication on Poets.org.
