College Democrats of America (CDA), the collegiate branch of the Democratic Party representing over 100,000 members nationwide, has elected Indian Americans to national leadership roles.
Sunjay A. Muralitharan, a political science student at the University of California, San Diego, has been elected national president, while Sohali Vaddula, a 20-year-old Texan and sophomore at Brown University, takes on the role of national vice president.
Muralitharan, who garnered the highest number of votes in the CDA’s recent elections, has consistently championed youth empowerment within the Democratic Party. “I'm committed to building a better Democratic Party that'll win big in 2026 and beyond. I promise to speak truth to power for all young Americans,” he posted on his X (formerly twitter)
Today, I was elected National President of @CollegeDems of America. I'm committed to building a better Democratic Party that'll win big in 2026 and beyond. I promise to speak truth to power for all young Americans.

I hope you'll join me in this fight.
An aspiring politician, Muralitharan previously served as vice president of College Democrats of UC San Diego and national vice president of CDA, among other leadership roles. Beyond campus, he was the youngest superdelegate in California during the 2024 DNC Convention and spearheaded the California Democratic Party’s digital outreach to young voters.
Muralitharan, who has been featured in outlets like The New York Times, envisions a political system free from corporate and foreign dominance and plans to modernize the economy in the age of AI. Looking ahead, he aspires to attend law school and run for office.
Vaddula, a sophomore studying international and public affairs at Brown University, has emerged as a leading voice in youth advocacy. A member of the Texas Democratic Party’s State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC), she brings a wealth of experience to her new role.
Today I have officially been elected National Vice President of @CollegeDems, giving me a seat on the @DNC and SDEC of @texasdemocrats. I’m ready to fight to represent the values of young ppl and College Democrats’ leaders to @TheDemocrats. Our time is now. Are you with me? pic.twitter.com/Ud25MV6pX4

She has previously served as national director of communications for High School Democrats of America. At CDA, she was national communications director before becoming vice president. She has also engaged in grassroots organizing with MOVE Texas and volunteered with Brown VOTES.
A staunch advocate for reproductive rights, Vaddula has expressed her commitment to overturning the reversal of Roe v. Wade and challenging restrictive laws like Texas’s SB8. “Our time is now,” she declared, pledging to fight for young Americans’ values and priorities.
