Indian Consul General interacts with key officials, business leaders in Shanghai

Since taking office earlier this year, CGI Mathur has held meetings with foreign diplomats and diaspora business leaders.

India’s newly appointed Consul General in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, who took office in January of this year, is engaging with key government officials and Indian business leaders to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties.

Bilateral engagements and diplomatic meetings

Mathur met with Kong Fu’an, Director General of the Foreign Affairs Office of Shanghai Municipality, on March 10 to formally present his credentials as India’s 13th Consul General to Shanghai. The meeting highlighted efforts to deepen economic and diplomatic cooperation between India and the region.

As part of his international outreach, Mathur met Muhammad Alnaqbi, Consul General of the United Arab Emirates, on March 11. Their discussion focused on strengthening the economic and cultural partnership between India and the UAE. In a similar effort to enhance regional ties, he met with Indonesian Consul General Berlianto Situngkir on March 10, discussing potential areas of cooperation between India and Indonesia.



Focus on Indian businesses in China

Supporting Indian enterprises operating in China, Mathur met with Surender Sharma, Murugappa Group, country manager for Greater China on March 10. The meeting provided insights into the company's operations and reflected the Consulate’s commitment to facilitating Indian businesses in the region.



At the Yarn Expo Spring 2025, the largest textile exhibition of its kind, Mathur interacted with Indian exhibitors at the India Pavilion on March 11. The pavilion showcased contamination-free Kasturi cotton, attracting interest from international buyers. The expo, featuring over 500 exhibitors from 12 countries, underscored India’s role in the global textile market.



India’s role in global AI development

The Indian Consulate in Shanghai also hosted a discussion on March 11 titled "AI for the World: India’s Role in Shaping the Future of Technology." Mukesh Sh.arma, regional head of Tech Mahindra in China, addressed an international audience, outlining India’s advancements in artificial intelligence. 

The event highlighted India’s AI initiatives, including the $1.25 billion IndiaAI mission and a $3 billion investment from Microsoft to expand AI and cloud infrastructure in India.

With India ranking among the top global AI hubs, the discussion emphasized the country’s role in developing AI-driven applications across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and spacetech. Analysts project India’s AI industry to grow to $17 billion by 2027, reflecting its increasing influence in global AI advancements.
