The Indian Consulate in Melbourne was vandalised, with the Indian High Commission in Canberra confirming on Apr. 11 that it has formally raised the matter with Australian authorities.

The incident, first reported by The Australia Today, is the latest in a troubling string of provocations directed at the Melbourne consulate, which has been defaced on previous occasions as well.

In a post shared on X, the High Commission expressed concern over the repeated targeting of Indian diplomatic spaces. “The incident of defacing at the premises of the Consulate General of India in Melbourne by miscreants has been raised with Australian authorities. All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety and security of Indian diplomatic and consular premises and personnel in the country,” the post stated.

Victoria Police said the act of vandalism took place in the early hours of Apr.10, around 1:00 am. Authorities have not yet released further details on the suspects or the nature of the damage.

The Melbourne consulate has faced similar provocations in the past. During previous years of heightened international tension, slogans had been scrawled on the building's exterior.

There have been previous such acts of vandalism in Australia with Indian community spaces as a target. In 2023, flags were tied to the gates of the Indian Consulate in Brisbane shortly after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit. The same year, BBC reported that the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Sydney was defaced.
