Indian Institute of Science honors Indian American George Brody with Alumni award
Brody is amongst 6 others who will be honored at a ceremony in December 2024.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has awarded Indian-American alumnus, George Brody with the 2024 Distinguished Alumnus Awards in recognition of his contributions to technology, academia, and innovation.
Brody, a 1968 graduate of IISc’s department of electrical engineering, has played a transformative role in the technology sector, blending corporate experience with entrepreneurial success. The founder and CEO of InfoNet of Things LLC, he serves as chair of the board at TurboStart.
Brody's career spans nearly five decades, marked by leadership roles across startups and corporate ventures. He founded GlobeRanger, a company specializing in RFID and IoT technology, which grew into a global player before being acquired by Fujitsu in 2014. Known for his pioneering "enterprise edge" vision, Brody has significantly influenced the wireless and IoT sectors.
During his tenure as vice president at Nortel Networks, he oversaw global wireless product development, including the Bell Northern Research Labs, leading innovations in wireless technology and nurturing a team of over 3,000 engineers.
Brody has been a driving force in technology leadership in both corporate and startup ecosystems and remains actively involved in IISc's global outreach as president and director of the IISc Foundation in the USA. His extensive experience also includes advisory roles, including the board of directors for NeuroRehabVR, which focuses on virtual reality-based neuro-rehabilitation applications.
This year also marked the introduction of the Young Alumnus/Alumna Medals for alumni under 40, awarded to two individuals, including Indian- American Himabindu Lakkaraju.
Lakkaraju, an assistant professor at Harvard University, has been recognized for her groundbreaking work in responsible artificial intelligence (AI). Her research emphasizes transparency, fairness, and robustness in AI, contributing to critical fields like healthcare and criminal justice.
A 2010 graduate from IISc’s Department of Computer Science and Automation, Lakkaraju has received numerous accolades, including the Microsoft Research Dissertation Grant.
“We are very proud of the accomplishments of our distinguished and young alumni awardees,” said G Rangarajan, director, IISc. “We hope that this recognition reinforces their commitment to the pursuit of excellence in their respective fields, and serves as an inspiration for students and young researchers.”
