Indian national charged with alleged assault at Sydney airport

The security officer’s condition following the alleged assault has not been disclosed, but authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of airport workers and travelers. The defendant’s court proceedings will continue as the legal process unfolds.

A 27-year-old Indian national appeared in a Sydney court on Wednesday, charged with allegedly assaulting a security officer at the Sydney Airport on October 28, 2024. 

According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the man allegedly forced open an aerobridge door at the international terminal and boarded an aircraft without authorization. Upon confrontation by the flight crew, the man exited the plane but allegedly attacked a security officer in the terminal, rendering the officer unconscious.

He faces charges under section 59(1) of the Crimes Act 1900 (Cth) for assault occasioning actual bodily harm, an offense carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Authorities Condemn Airport Violence

AFP Detective Inspector Dom Stephenson emphasized the agency's zero-tolerance stance on violent and abusive behavior in airports.

“The AFP works closely with our partners in the airline industry to protect travelers and workers and will intervene if anyone’s behavior in or around an airport becomes aggressive or violent,” Stephenson said.

The security officer’s condition following the alleged assault has not been disclosed, but authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of airport workers and travelers.
