Indian-origin lawyer fired over workplace relationship with CEO in US
The company stated that both officials violated internal policies and ethical guidelines, despite the relationship being consensual.

Norfolk Southern Corporation has terminated Nabanita Nag, an Indian-origin lawyer and the company's chief legal officer, following an internal investigation into an inappropriate workplace relationship with the company's chief executive officer, Alan Shaw.
Both executives were dismissed for violating internal policies and the company's code of ethics, despite the relationship being consensual. The transportation company, which operates a vast freight network across 22 U.S. states, confirmed the decision in a statement.
"This change in leadership comes in connection with preliminary findings from an ongoing investigation that determined Shaw violated company policies by engaging in a consensual relationship with the company's chief legal officer. Shaw's departure is unrelated to the company's performance, financial reporting, and results of operations," the company stated.
Nag, who had a distinguished career before joining Norfolk Southern, with experience at three Fortune 300 companies, including Goldman Sachs, joined Norfolk Southern in 2020 as general counsel, was promoted to chief legal officer in 2022, and became executive vice president of Corporate Affairs in 2023.
In addition to her roles in legal and corporate affairs, Nag oversaw the company's audit and compliance, government relations, corporate communications, corporate giving, and legal departments.
She has a bachelor's degree in Government and English from Georgetown University and a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law.
Following the departures, Mark R. George, the company's chief financial officer, has been appointed as the new president and CEO.
