An Indian-origin man from New Jersey has been charged for allegedly sexual assaulting a co-passenger while on board a domestic flight earlier this year, U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme announced this week.

Bhaveshkumar Dahyabhai Shukla, 36, of Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey, faces one count of abusive sexual contact within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States. The alleged incident occurred during an American Airlines flight from Bozeman, Montana, to Dallas, Texas, on Jan.26, 2025.

According to the indictment, Shukla is accused of initiating sexual contact with another passenger without their consent. Authorities have not released further details about the incident or the identity of the complainant.

If convicted, Shukla faces up to two years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a minimum of five years of supervised release.

The FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport Police led the investigation. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana.

Shukla is scheduled to appear for arraignment on Apr.17.

U.S. Attorney Alme emphasized that the indictment is not evidence of guilt. “The charging documents are merely accusations and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” he said.
