An Indian origin man in the UK, Raj Sidpara, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years for the murder of his partner, Tarnjeet Riaz, also known as Tarnjeet Chagger. The verdict was delivered last week following a trial at Leicester Crown Court.

Tarnjeet, who had been in a relationship with Sidpara for five months, was found dead at his home on Tarbat Road, Thurnby Lodge, on May.6. Emergency services arrived to find Tarnjeet with severe facial trauma and multiple broken ribs, but she was already deceased.

During the trial, Sidpara admitted to causing the injuries but denied intending to kill Tarnjeet or inflict serious harm. However, the court found him guilty of murder.

The sentencing coincides with Leicestershire Police's support for the global White Ribbon Day campaign, which aims to prevent violence against women and girls. This year’s focus is on challenging men’s attitudes and behaviors towards women.

Detective Inspector Emma Matts, the senior investigating officer, condemned the crime, stating: “Tarnjeet was killed at the hands of someone she was in a relationship with. Someone who should have supported and protected her, not someone she should have feared would brutally attack her.”

She emphasized the complex nature of domestic abuse, which often leaves victims hesitant to seek help: “We know domestic abuse is very complex. Often victims don’t want to share with family and friends the details of what is happening behind closed doors, let alone with police. But it is vital anyone suffering gets the support they need to put a stop to the abuse before it is too late.”

Matts also highlighted the support systems available, including Leicestershire Police’s dedicated domestic abuse team and various local and national organizations that provide assistance.

Tarnjeet’s tragic death has left her family grappling with grief and unanswered questions, as Matts acknowledged the profound impact on those close to her.
