United Nations’s 2024 IMO (International Maritime Organization) Bravery Award was awarded to Captain Avilash Rawat. The award is given for his extraordinary bravery at sea during the Red Sea rescue mission.

Rawat accepted this honor on behalf of his crew from the oil tanker Marlin Luanda at a ceremony held at the IMO headquarters in London.

On the evening of Jan. 26, 2024, Marlin Luanda, carrying 84,147 tons of naphtha, was en route from Suez to Incheon when it was struck by an anti-ship ballistic missile. The attack ignited a cargo tank. In this critical situation, Captain Rawat acted swiftly and with great presence of mind to fight the fire while also ensuring the safety of the crew. After the starboard lifeboat was used up, the remaining crew members were gathered at the port lifeboat station, ready for potential evacuation.

In recognition of his extraordinary courage and valor in saving lives, IMO announced in July that Rawat would be honored. The ceremony at the London headquarters formally acknowledged him and his team for their heroic actions. Captain Rawat accepted the award on behalf of his crew.

Interestingly, Captain Rawat and his team controlled the fire using a stable foam monitor and portable hoses. As the fire spread, there was a risk of it reaching nearby tanks. The foam used to control the fire ran out, and the team then used seawater to bring the fire under control.

After accepting the award, Captain Rawat expressed his gratitude, saying, "I would like to thank my entire team for their extraordinary courage, professionalism, and unwavering dedication. Your support and trust during those critical hours were invaluable, and together, we overcame challenges that seemed insurmountable."
