Neelam Shinde, a 35-year-old student from Satara, Maharashtra, is in critical condition after a car accident in California on Feb. 14. She is currently in a coma and being treated in the ICU, Supriya Sule, a member of Parliament, told Indian media.

The driver who allegedly caused the accident has been arrested.

As Neelam’s condition remains grave, her family is desperately seeking assistance from the Indian government to obtain an emergency visa that would allow her father, Tanaji Shinde, to travel to the United States and be by her side during this critical period.

Shinde’s family has applied for an urgent visa, but the application has faced delays, making it all the more pressing for the authorities to expedite the process.

Sule, daughter of veteran politician Sharad Pawar, has voiced her concern and raised the issue on social media.

On Feb. 26, Sule posted a heartfelt appeal on X (formerly Twitter), urging the Indian government to intervene and provide the necessary support.

She wrote, “Student Neelam Shinde has met with an accident in the USA and is hospitalized in a local hospital. Her father, Tanaji Shinde, from Satara, Maharashtra, India, urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical emergency. Tanaji Shinde has applied for an urgent visa to the USA and requires assistance.”

Sule further requested the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to step in and help with the processing of the visa. She tagged Dr. S. Jaishankar, the Indian Minister of External Affairs, and the official handles of the MEA’s consular services, asking them to "look into the matter and provide the necessary assistance”.
