India’s stolen wealth could carpet London four times over, says Oxfam report

Between 1765 and 1900, the British systematically drained India's wealth, diverting a whopping $33.8 trillion into the coffers of Britain’s wealthiest 10 percent, the report highlights.

India's colonial past is often romanticized in history books, but a new Oxfam report pulls no punches, estimating that the wealth drained by the British Raj could carpet London not once, not twice, but four times over. Released at the 2025 World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting, the report, ‘Takers, Not Makers’, argues that colonialism's grip hasn't weakened; it has merely transformed into a subtler form of economic control.
