The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), India’s premier biosciences hub and one of the largest bio-incubators, has announced a partnership with the University of Massachusetts Venture Development Center and TiE Boston.
This collaboration aims to drive innovation and entrepreneurship in the healthcare, life sciences, and biotechnology sectors. The initiative will establish an Indo-US Corridor, fostering cross-border growth and opportunities in these cutting-edge domains.
Speaking at the signing, Dr. Saiyed of C-CAMP highlighted the potential of the partnership, stating, “This marks the coming together of C-CAMP as one of the richest startup ecosystems in India, with Boston, the sixth largest startup ecosystem as per the 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report through this LoI with UMass and TiE Boston.”
Key infrastructural elements of this partnership include co-incubation and soft-landing support for startups and SMEs in both ecosystems, mutual access to technological capabilities and scientific expertise, and investments in associated startups, particularly in the biopharma and biotech sectors, facilitated by TiE Boston. The Letter of Intent (LoI) is expected to develop into a full-fledged Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as anchor programs under the partnership take shape.
“We are tremendously excited about the possibilities of this LoI to foster collaborations in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship development to create societal impact. Boston is also home to one of the strongest regional economies in the US. We are aiming to leverage that by opening the doors to Angel and Venture Capital investments for Indian startups. This will contribute to India’s booming bioeconomy in alignment with Govt of India priorities,” said Dr. Saiyed.
TiE Boston, one of the world’s largest non-profit networks supporting startups, expressed enthusiasm for the venture. Dr Purnanand Sarma, President, TiE Boston, remarked, “Our initiative aims to leverage the networks of TiE’s Charter Members, Angel Investors, and Venture Capitalists to support startups from India and the US. Together with C-CAMP and UMass VDC, we aim to grow promising startups into global players.”
Dr Shubhro Sen, Executive Director, of Venture Development Center and Assistant Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives at the University of Massachusetts, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This collaboration is a unique opportunity to support high-impact C-CAMP startups by providing H1B visas, co-working spaces, funding access, and specialized equipment in Boston. We also look forward to enabling US-based companies to explore partnerships and market opportunities in India and Asia.”
