International Atlantic Economic Society names Kalyan Chakraborty as December 'Member of the Month'

He was honored for his impactful research, global contributions, and dedication to economic scholarship.

Kalyan Chakraborty, a seasoned economist and associate professor at Lamar University, has been named the International Atlantic Economic Society’s (IAES) Member of the Month for December 2024, in recognition of his extensive contributions to research, teaching, and global economic discourse.

Chakraborty, who has over 25 years of teaching and research experience, described the honor as a significant milestone in his academic career. “I feel humbled and lucky to be selected among thousands of highly qualified and reputed research scholars around the world who are members of IAES. This recognition is a motivation for me to undertake innovative research that is meaningful and valuable to society.”

During his career, Chakraborty has taught at Emory University, the University of Tampa, and Emporia State University, among other institutions. Before joining Lamar University, he served as associate director and senior research scientist at the Haas Center for Research at the University of West Florida.

A prolific researcher, Chakraborty specializes in applied microeconomics, health economics, and biotechnology policy. He has published in peer-reviewed journals, including Applied Economics and Contemporary Economic Policy. In 2018, he received the Atlantic Economic Journal's Best Paper Award.

Chakraborty joined the IAES in 1998 and has since presented at conferences worldwide. His ongoing research includes analyzing the link between education quality and economic growth in 53 countries and examining how minimum wage laws affect food insecurity.

As an advocate for meaningful research, Chakraborty encourages young economists to explore the economics of education, a field he believes holds vast potential for societal impact. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Utah State University, and an M.S. in Agricultural and Applied Economics from the University of Nevada, Reno. He also earned an M.A. in Economics, a law degree, and a diploma in management from India.
