Jasvant Modi sponsors Prakrit Scholarship

Indian-American gastroenterologist and philanthropist, Jasvant Modi, has extended support to the fifth cohort of the Bhagwan Mahavira Prakrit Fellowship Program, which aims to promote the study and preservation of Prakrit, an ancient Indian language integral to Jain literature.
The fellowship, facilitated by the International School for Jain Studies (ISJS), will welcome eight participants for its 2024-25 academic year, which began last month. The ISJS, based in Pune, India, promotes Jain academic studies across the globe, and North America in particular.
The nine-month residential program, hosted on ISJS's new campus, immerses fellows in advanced Prakrit studies. Modi’s financial backing covers all essential costs, including study materials and accommodations, and provides the participants access to leading experts in the field.
Modi emphasized the significance of the fellowship, stating, "Supporting the Bhagwan Mahavira Prakrit Fellowship Program is an honor, as it nurtures a new generation of scholars dedicated to preserving and advancing the understanding of Prakrit."
According to a release, a rigorous selection process ensures only the most qualified candidates are admitted, with the program aiming to produce scholars capable of making lasting contributions to the field.
Modi, originally from Godhra, India, has balanced his medical career with a commitment to philanthropy, guided by his Jain faith. His support for this fellowship is part of his broader efforts to promote education, spirituality, and compassion, core values of Jainism.
A graduate of B.J. Medical College, Modi immigrated to the United States in 1975, where he remained an active advocate for charitable causes.
