Dr. Kalpana Kanal, a professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Washington, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Upstate New York Chapter of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (UNYAPM). The accolade recognizes her "lifelong and lasting contributions to medical physics."
Kanal, who serves as the section chief of diagnostic physics and the program director of the Imaging Physics Residency at UW, has made significant strides in the field of medical physics. Her research interests include computed tomography, interventional radiology, mammography, pediatric radiology, and computed radiography, with a particular focus on radiation dose and image quality issues.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Kanal said, “It is an honor to be recognized by UNYAPM for work that has been both professionally fulfilling and impactful in the field of medical physics.”
Kanal's career is marked by numerous accomplishments, including practical research that has addressed clinical challenges in radiology. Her collaborative work with radiologists, surgeons, residents, and fellow physicists has led to significant publications that bridge research and clinical application.
A native of India, Kanal moved to the United States in 1989 to pursue postgraduate education. She earned a doctorate in Diagnostic Medical Physics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed a Clinical Medical Physics Residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Her contributions have also been recognized locally, with honors such as the UWMC Patient Safety Hero Award in 2017. Beyond her professional pursuits, Kanal is an advocate for wellness and an avid cyclist, hiker, and traveler.
