Khalistani  extremist and leader of the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) outfit, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has threatened to disrupt India’s annual diaspora celebration event the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025, set to take place in Bhubaneswar from Jan 8 to 10.

The event, which celebrates the contributions of the Indian diaspora, will be hosted in Odisha for the first time.

According to media reports which have accessed the video message recorded by Pannun he has described Bhubaneswar as a "terror city" rather than its traditional title of "temple city." He urged his supporters to disrupt the event and warned against traveling along the route from Bhubaneswar airport to Janata Maidan, where the event will be held.

In the video, Pannun stated, “Bhubaneswar has once again proved to be a terror city, not a temple city, as it is hosting ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Terror Divas.’ Disrupt and eliminate India’s efforts to rebuild a spy network dismantled by the Trudeau and Biden administrations after the assassination of Shaheed Hardeep Singh Nijjar.”

He also accused Indian authorities of working against the sovereignty of the U.S. and Canada, urging his followers to “stay loyal to the countries where you reside” and take action to disrupt the event.

This is not the first time Pannun has targeted Bhubaneswar. In 2024, he attempted to disrupt the All India Director Generals of Police-Inspector Generals of Police (DGPs-IGPs) Conference, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Despite offering a reward for raising Khalistani flags during the conference, the event proceeded without incident under tight security.

Authorities have responded to the latest threat by tightening security measures to safeguard Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025. Local police and central agencies are coordinating efforts to ensure the safety of attendees and prevent any disruptions.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is expected to draw participants from across the globe, highlighting the role of the Indian diaspora in national and global development.
