Kieran Fernandes, an Indian-origin professor, has been appointed as the new executive dean of Durham University Business School, taking over from Professor Cathy Cassell, who is retiring in April 2025.
Currently the associate pro vice-chancellor (development and engagement) and professor of operations management of the business school, Fernandes will oversee the strategic development and financial performance of the Business School, while playing a central role in advancing the university’s overarching strategy in his new role.
Since joining Durham University in 2013, Fernandes has held various leadership roles, including head of the department for management and marketing, associate dean for Internationalisation, and interim executive dean.
Fernandes brings over 20 years of academic leadership, research, and strategic development expertise. His research focuses on operations management, innovation diffusion, and complex systems. Fernandes has collaborated with industry, government, and international organisations, driving regional economic development and innovation.
His accolades include being a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Wolfson Research Institute. He has also served as executive director of the Northern Powerhouse Innovation Observatory and held advisory roles with the UK National Commission for UNESCO, the Chartered Management Institute, and other organisations.
“Durham University Business School is renowned for its academic excellence and global impact,” Fernandes said. “I look forward to working collaboratively with our exceptional community to foster innovation, inspire future leaders, and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world.”
Professor Mike Shipman, deputy vice-chancellor and provost, praised Fernandes’ leadership, calling it “clear and exciting,” with the potential to elevate the Business School to new heights.
Fernandes holds a PhD in operations management and systems from the University of Warwick, an MS in Industrial and systems engineering at Mississippi State University, and earned a BE in production engineering from Walchand Institute of Technology, Maharashtra, India.
