Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Biocon Group Chairperson, was honored with the prestigious Jamsetji Tata Award at the Indian Society for Quality (ISQ) Annual Conference 2024 in Bengaluru, recognizing her pioneering role in shaping India’s biosciences sector.
Biocon is a global biopharmaceutical company, and Mazumdar-Shaw is a globally recognized biotech leader whose groundbreaking work has transformed healthcare, making treatments for diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune diseases more accessible. She has been honored with numerous accolades, including India’s Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, the Order of Australia, and the French Legion of Honour.
In addition to her contributions to Biocon, she has served as vice chair of the US-India Business Council’s Global Board and was recently elected to the Board of Trustees of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Corporation (MIT) Corporation.
In her acceptance speech, Mazumdar-Shaw expressed deep gratitude, emphasizing the special significance of the award, which reflects Tata’s legacy of excellence and societal transformation.
She said, “I am deeply honored and humbled to accept the 2024 Jamsetji Tata Award instituted by ISQ. This award holds a very special meaning to me as it is named after one of India’s greatest visionaries —a man whose legacy of excellence, innovation, and nation-building continues to inspire us all.”
“Jamsetji Tata’s vision of quality and his belief in industry’s power to drive societal change resonate with my own journey,” she remarked.
Mazumdar-Shaw earned a post-graduate diploma in malting and brewing from Ballarat College, Melbourne University, in 1975.
Mazumdar-Shaw is the only Indian on Forbes’ "World’s Self-Made Women Billionaires" list and is featured in Fierce Biotech's "World's 25 Most Influential People in Biopharma," Forbes' "World’s 100 Most Powerful Women," and Fortune's "Top 25 Most Powerful Women in Asia-Pacific."
Her influence extends further with recognition in Scientific American’s "Worldview 100 List" and Foreign Policy's "100 Leading Global Thinkers." She has consistently ranked in the Medicine Maker Power List Top 10 since 2015, achieving the No. 1 spot in the "Business Captains" category in 2018.
The award, named after the legendary Jamsetji Tata, acknowledges leaders who have significantly contributed to Indian society through exceptional commitment to quality and innovation.
