Krishnamoorthi, other Democrats fight Trump’s postal service overhaul

The letter comes in response to a report by The Washington Post, which revealed that the Trump administration was exploring a plan to remove the bipartisan Postal Board of Governors and integrate USPS into the Department of Commerce.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, along with fellow Democratic members of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, has called on President Donald Trump to abandon any plans to dismantle or privatize the US Postal Service (USPS).

In a letter addressed to Trump, the lawmakers emphasized the potential harm such actions could inflict on the postal network’s affordability, reliability, and independence.

“The Postal Service functions as an independent, self-sustaining agency that relies on its own revenues, not Congress, to fund the postal network. Your unprecedented and reckless plan to dismantle the Postal Service as an independent agency would directly undermine the affordability and reliability of the U.S. postal system,” the members wrote.

They added, “This short-sighted effort will do nothing to improve delivery performance or set the Postal Service on a path of fiscal sustainability. It could instead subject the Postal Service and the entire mail network to political interference, shifting priorities of Administrations, and skyrocketing prices.”

The lawmakers also warned that the reported plans would threaten timely and affordable delivery of essential services, particularly in rural areas. “Your reported plans for the Postal Service would put at risk the timely, affordable delivery of life-saving medications, mail-in ballots, important financial documents, and letters from loved ones, especially in rural or less-profitable areas that the private sector refuses to service,” they added.

The letter comes in response to a report by The Washington Post, which revealed that the Trump administration was exploring a plan to remove the bipartisan Postal Board of Governors and integrate USPS into the Department of Commerce — a move that could disrupt the nation’s mail system and impact trillions of dollars in e-commerce transactions. Additional news reports by CNN noted that the White House remained silent on whether it intended to privatize the service, despite Trump’s previous support for such a measure.

Citing the U.S. Constitution, which grants Congress exclusive authority over postal operations, the lawmakers stressed that any effort to privatize the Postal Service would require congressional approval—an authorization they made clear they would not provide.

“We urge you to immediately withdraw all plans to dismantle one of our nation’s most cherished public institutions and uphold the Postal Service’s independent status as required by law,” the members concluded.
