Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Feb. 10 said he looked forward to meeting his "friend”, President Donald Trump, on whose invitation he will be making an official visit to the United States from Feb. 12-13.
The two leaders will be meeting for the first time since Trump's return to the White House on Jan. 20. Discussions expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, defense, energy, and supply chain resilience.
“This visit will further cement India-USA friendship and boost ties in diverse sectors,” Modi said on X before departing. He described the trip as an opportunity to build on the successes of bilateral collaboration during Trump’s first term.
In Washington DC, I look forward to meeting @POTUS @realDonaldTrump. This visit will further cement India-USA friendship and boost ties in diverse sectors. I warmly recall working with President Trump during his first term and I am sure our talks will build on the ground covered…

“This visit will be an opportunity to build upon the successes of our collaboration in his first term and develop an agenda to further elevate and deepen our partnership, including in the areas of technology, trade, defense, energy, and supply chain resilience. We will work together for the mutual benefit of the people of our two countries and shape a better future for the world,” Modi said in a statement.
Reflecting on past engagements, he added, “I have a very warm recollection of working together in his first term in building a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the US.”
The visit, coming within the first month of Trump's second term, coincides with tensions over the US administration’s tariff threats to India and the recent deportation of 104 illegal Indian immigrants. The deportation, carried out with handcuffs and leg chains, triggered a political uproar in India, with opposition parties calling it "inhuman."
Late last month, Modi and Trump spoke on the phone and discussed India-US relations. "Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership," Modi tweeted.
Before traveling to the US, Modi will visit France from Feb. 10-12 at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. In Paris, he will co-chair the AI Action Summit, engaging with world leaders and technology CEOs. “We will exchange views on a collaborative approach to AI technology for innovation and the greater public good in an inclusive, secure, and trustworthy manner,” he said.
Modi’s France visit will also include discussions on the 2047 Horizon Roadmap for the India-France strategic partnership. He and Macron will travel to Marseille to inaugurate the first Indian Consulate in France and visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, where India is a key partner. He will also pay tribute to Indian soldiers at the Mazargues War Cemetery.
