Governor Jim Pillen of Nebraska unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi today at the Governor’s Office in the historic Nebraska State Capitol. The event, a first-of-its-kind within the nine states under the jurisdiction of the Indian Consulate in Seattle, celebrates Gandhi’s timeless principles of peace, nonviolence, and justice.
Several distinguished guests attended the unveiling, including Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly, former Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson, and celebrated Coach Tom Osborne. Consul General of India, Prakash Gupta, along with prominent members of the Indian American community, also graced the ceremony. Speakers underscored the relevance of Gandhi’s values of Ahimsa and Satyagraha in contemporary society.
“This is a proud moment for Nebraska, as we honor a global icon whose teachings continue to inspire millions worldwide,” said Governor Pillen during his address. He highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Consulate General of India in Seattle and the Governor’s Office in bringing this tribute to fruition.
In a symbolic gesture, Governor Pillen issued an official proclamation designating December 6 as “A Day of Remembrance for Mahatma Gandhi” across Nebraska. The proclamation acknowledges Gandhi’s pivotal role as a global symbol of peace and justice and his enduring influence on movements for human dignity and equality worldwide.
The Governor emphasized that Gandhi’s philosophy serves as a beacon of hope and guidance in addressing modern challenges. “Through this proclamation, we honor the legacy of a man whose life epitomized truth, resilience, and the power of peaceful resistance,” Pillen said.
This unveiling follows a similar event earlier this year at the base of the Space Needle in Seattle Center on October 2, commemorating Gandhi’s birthday. Nebraska’s addition to this growing tribute underscores the region’s commitment to fostering cultural ties and promoting Gandhi’s universal message of nonviolence.
The Indian Consulate in Seattle, inaugurated recently, oversees Nebraska along with eight other states, including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska. Consul General Gupta expressed gratitude for Nebraska’s warm embrace of Gandhi’s ideals. “This collaboration exemplifies the shared values of India and the United States, highlighting the importance of dialogue and mutual respect,” he remarked.
The bust’s placement within the Governor’s Office in the Nebraska State Capitol further underscores its significance as a symbol of peace and unity. Attendees of the ceremony expressed hope that Gandhi’s teachings would continue to inspire generations to come.
