A 33-year-old Indian man, Nitin Mishra of Jaipur, has been sentenced for his role in an international drug trafficking operation involving the distribution of controlled substances, including opioids, across the United States. The announcement came from US Attorney's Office, District of Vermont, on Feb.4.
Mishra, who was extradited from Albania to the US, was sentenced on Feb.3, by United States District Judge William K. Sessions III. Having already spent approximately 28 months in custody, he was sentenced to time served and ordered to pay $7,300 in forfeiture.
According to court records, Mishra conspired with two Vermont residents and others to smuggle and distribute thousands of pills, including the Schedule II controlled substance Tapentadol and the Schedule IV substances Tramadol, Carisoprodol, and Zolpidem. The operation, which ran from early 2019 to June 2021, involved multiple shipments of opioids and misbranded drugs sent from India to the US and redistributed nationwide.
The case was investigated by the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations, Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Rutland City Police Department.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael P. Drescher commended the efforts of law enforcement agencies in dismantling the trafficking network.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew C. Gilman prosecuted the case, while Mishra was represented by attorney Robert L. Sussman.
