Amandeep Singh, an Indian-origin man from Roslyn, New York, has been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison on Feb.7 for a fatal wrong-way crash in May 2023 that killed two 14-year-old boys and injured two others in Jericho, New York.
Singh, 36, pleaded guilty in Jan.3, 2025 to aggravated vehicular homicide and multiple other charges, including manslaughter in the second degree, assault in the second degree, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, and driving while intoxicated. Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced the sentencing on Feb.7.
"The lives of every driver on North Broadway that night were meaningless to Amandeep Singh, as he sped, high on cocaine and drunk on alcohol, until he crossed over traffic and crashed into a car full of teenage boys," DA Donnelly said.
"Ethan Falkowitz and Drew Hassenbein will never grow up, graduate from high school, or go to college because of this selfish and callous defendant. Now that his sentence has been handed down, all that awaits Amandeep Singh are the four walls of a prison cell," Donnelly added.
According to prosecutors, on May 3, 2023, at approximately 10:19 p.m., Singh was driving a 2021 Dodge Ram TRX at 95 miles per hour when he crossed into oncoming traffic on North Broadway while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.
He continued driving south in the northbound lanes before crashing into an Alfa Romeo carrying four teenage passengers. A crash analysis revealed that Singh was still traveling at 75 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone at the time of impact.
The collision killed Drew Hassenbein and Ethan Falkowitz, both 14, who were seated on the right side of the Alfa Romeo. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
The two other teenage occupants suffered multiple injuries, including a concussion, a leg injury, and glass shards embedded in one victim’s eye.
Following the crash, Singh fled the scene and was later found hiding near a dumpster in a nearby shopping center parking lot. He was arrested by officers from the Nassau County Police Department.
A search warrant revealed that Singh had a blood alcohol content of .15 percent—nearly twice the legal limit—four hours after the crash. Cocaine was also detected in his system.
The victims, both students at Roslyn Middle School, were promising young athletes and members of the Roslyn High School Tennis Team. They had been celebrating a tennis match victory at a local restaurant before the crash.
DA Donnelly urged lawmakers to impose harsher penalties for drunk and impaired drivers.
"We need legislation that ensures drivers like Singh who make these disastrous choices face consequences that reflect the true devastation they cause," she said. "I will continue to urge our New York State lawmakers to work with my office and the families of victims like Ethan and Drew to impose tougher penalties for those who drive under the influence and take precious lives."
Singh's case was prosecuted by Bureau Chief Michael Bushwack and Senior Assistant District Attorney Brianna Ryan from the Vehicular Crimes Bureau, under the supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney Kevin Higgins.
Singh was represented by attorneys James Kousouros and Edward Sapone.
