Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, an alumna of Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), will return to the campus on December 4, 2024, to deliver a talk as part of the Chancellor’s Speaker Series.

During her talk titled “STEM to Leadership: Solving for Tomorrow Beyond Engineering,”  Miller will explore how a foundation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) can pave the way for leadership roles beyond traditional engineering fields.

She will also discuss her experiences in public service, including her focus on transportation, mental health, and STEM equity.  “Her policy profile includes matters relating to transportation, mental health and STEM equity and building a state where no one is left behind,” a statement from the University noted.

The Chancellor’s Speaker Series, established in 2023, brings prominent figures to campus to discuss societal issues and inspire creative dialogue. Previous speakers include former U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, Water.org co-founder Gary White, and former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft.

A 1989 civil engineering graduate of Missouri S&T, Miller is the first woman of color and immigrant elected to statewide office in Maryland, as well as the second woman to serve as the state’s lieutenant governor. Born in India, Miller immigrated to the United States at age seven and built a career as a transportation engineer before entering public service.
