The Montgomery County Muslim Foundation (MCMF) celebrated Diwali on Oct. 31, in an event organized by Razia Ahmad. About 25 community members gathered to learn about Diwali’s cultural and religious importance, marking another step in MCMF's efforts to bring people together.
Shashi Sharma, a longtime resident, explained Diwali’s Hindu roots, referencing the story of Lord Rama’s journey in the Ramayana.
Manjit Gill, another member of the community, spoke about Diwali in the Sikh tradition, honoring the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from prison.
She also noted this year’s Diwali marked the 40th anniversary of the 1984 Sikh riots. She shared how other regions of India observe Diwali differently, including worship of Kali in Bengal and celebrations of enlightenment in Buddhist and Jain communities.
The MCMF has been active since 2008 when the late Tufail Ahmad and residents founded the organization to promote a society free from hunger and hate.
MCMF offers food, aid to those experiencing homelessness, and scholarships, welcoming everyone regardless of faith or background. Supported by community donations and the Maryland and Montgomery County administrations, MCMF’s mission is one of compassion and service.
