The Michigan State Senate on Nov. 13 unanimously adopted by a voice vote SR 145 that seeks to recognize the historical, cultural, and religious importance of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights.
The resolution which was presented to the the Indian American community in Michigan reads, "Michigan remains resolute in its commitment to fostering diversity of experience and religious acceptance. We recognize the Diwali message of tolerance, compassion, and acceptance of others, which resonates with the ideals of the American spirit."
SR 145 was sponsored by Senators Michael Webber, Mark Huizenga, Veronica Klinefelt, Mary Cavanagh, Jim Runestad, Dayna Polehanki, John Damoose, Lana Theis, Sue Shink, Rosemary Bayer, Joseph Bellino, Stephanie Chang, Sam Singh, Paul Wojno and Mallory McMorrow.
"Diwali is celebrated by so many of our neighbors, and it is an honor to help recognize this wonderful festival in the Michigan Senate with the adoption of the Diwali resolution," Sen. Webber said on the resoultion's adoption.
Sunny Reddy, Indian American Republican, who was elected to the Wayne State University Board of Governors and attended the ceremony in the Senate said, "It was an honor to be present at the Michigan Senate for the adoption of the Diwali resolution, recognizing a festival celebrated by so many of our neighbors. This acknowledgment highlights Michigan’s commitment to fostering diversity and religious acceptance."
The adoption of the resolution marks a significant victory for Indian Americans, who account for the largest subgroup of Asian Americans living in Michigan. Most of them reside in Detroit and the surrounding area, in places like Troy, Novi, and Farmington Hills.
