In a significant step toward strengthening diplomatic ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron jointly inaugurated the Consulate General of India in Marseille.

The event marked a new chapter in the India-France strategic partnership, reinforcing cultural, economic, and diplomatic cooperation. “This consulate will serve as an important bridge, strengthening our cultural, economic and people-to-people connections,” Modi said.

The new consular office will serve four key French administrative regions in the South of France—Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur, Corsica, Occitanie, and Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes—enhancing consular services and bilateral engagement. It is India’s third diplomatic presence in France joining its embassy in Paris and a consulate in Saint-Denis, Réunion.

The inauguration ceremony witnessed an enthusiastic gathering of the Indian diaspora, who warmly welcomed both leaders. Prime Minister Modi expressed deep appreciation for President Macron’s presence, highlighting it as a special gesture of friendship between the two nations.

“Marseille’s links with India are well known. During the First World War, it was an important base for Indian troops. This city has a close link with Veer Savarkar as well,” Modi said.

“More than 100,000 Indians fought for France in 1914. Ten thousand never returned. They set foot on the soil of Marseille before fighting in the mud of the trenches, unaware that they were marching to their deaths. Their sacrifice binds France and India forever,” President Macron said.

The decision to establish the Consulate General was initially announced during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to France in July 2023. Marseille, the second most populous city in France, is a hub for trade, industry, energy, and luxury tourism, with growing economic and cultural connections to India. The opening of the Consulate General is expected to facilitate smoother consular operations, deepen trade relations, and promote people-to-people ties.
