In a heartfelt celebration of the life and legacy of Ustad Zakir Hussain, Asia Society and Sneh Arts, in collaboration with Sound Traditions, hosted a moving memorial tribute. The event, held in NYC on Feb.1, brought together cultural luminaries, devoted admirers, and musicians who honored the maestro through shared memories, stories, and music.
The evening commenced with opening remarks from Rachel Cooper (Asia Society), Sunny Thakkar (Sneh Arts & Sneh Arts Foundation), and Shruti Rawoot (Sound Traditions). Their words set the stage for a night filled with reverence and gratitude for Ustad Zakir Hussain’s extraordinary contributions to music and culture.
A deeply spiritual musical presentation followed, featuring a serene Dhrupad Bandish by Shruti Rawoot, a moving Islamic prayer by Amira Dvorah, and a Sanskrit peace prayer by Deepak Kumar accompanied by the tanpura. A specially curated video tribute showcased defining moments of Ustad Zakir Hussain’s illustrious career, allowing attendees to relive his journey and artistry.
Esteemed members of the community shared personal anecdotes and professional insights into the maestro’s enduring influence. The musical tribute continued with a stirring tabla and sarangi performance by Avirodh Sharma and Rohan Misra, dedicated to Zakir ji’s musical genius. Amira Dvorah delivered a soulful flute performance, interwoven with personal stories and fond memories.
The evening concluded with a powerful video featuring Ustad Zakir Hussain himself, speaking about the deep connection between a musician and their instrument. His words left a lasting impression on all present.
