A diverse gathering of worshippers in Chicago celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr in North Shore Holiday Inn, in Skokie, Illinois on Mar.30 despite inclement weather. People of all walks of life, including businessmen, industrialists, politicians, doctors, and families, came together in faith and unity.
Iftekhar Sherif, a community leader, advocate and Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) past president, highlighted the importance of giving and spiritual significance of Ramadan. He said Zakat, donating about 2.5 percent of one’s savings to those in need, is a fundamental pillar of Islam. This is just as essential as daily prayers, fasting, and Hajj.
Sherif commended the community for their resilience and generosity, and thanked the American government. “We are fortunate to live in one of the greatest nations in the world and it is our responsibility to uphold justice, unity and goodwill,” he said.
Imam Malik Mujahid also delivered a powerful sermon, reminding worshippers to be grateful for Allah’s blessings, family, health and faith. He said Ramadan is not just about fasting, but about spiritual growth and self-discipline.
The Imam encouraged the youth to read and understand the Quran daily, even if its just one verse. He explained that Eid is a symbol of togetherness, unity, and generosity, particularly in the United States where diverse communities come together to celebrate.
