The National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) condemned the mistreatment of Indian migrants during deportation by the U.S. government, calling it a violation of fundamental human rights and dignity.

NAPM is an alliance of activist groups in India focused on alter-globalization. It brings together various civil society organizations and individuals with similar goals, co-founded by Indian social activist Medha Patkar.

The organization expressed its disapproval of X and said, “NAPM unequivocally condemns the degrading mistreatment of Indian #migrants during #deportation by the U.S. govt as a violation of basic human rights and dignity. NAPM condemns the Indian government for justifying this subhuman treatment instead of standing up for its citizens.”

In a statement, NAPM said, “In the history of deportation, this is yet another new, cruel, and shameful low and marks the beginning of another era of racist politics.”

“NAPM unequivocally condemns this degrading mistreatment of Indian migrants during deportation by the U.S. government, which amounts to a violation of their basic human rights and dignity,” highlighted the organization.

It further stated, “It must be remembered that even if a citizen of one country violates a law in another country, their basic and inalienable human rights must be respected. NAPM also condemns the Indian government for justifying this sub-human treatment, instead of standing up for its citizens.”

The controversy began when a U.S. military plane carrying 104 deported Indian migrants landed in Amritsar, Punjab on Feb. 5. Reports revealed that the deportees were shackled during the flight, which sparked protests in India.

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar defended the use of restraints on deportees, stating that it aligns with the standard operating procedure (SOP) of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authority.

Jaishankar explained in the Rajya Sabha on Feb. 6 that the deportations, carried out by ICE, followed a protocol established in 2012 that includes the use of restraints during deportation by aircraft.

NAPM urged the Indian government, saying, “Indian authorities must explore the option of filing a complaint against the USA with the United Nations Human Rights Committee in this case.”
