Neera Tanden, who served as the domestic policy advisor to President Joe Biden, has rejoined the Washington, D.C.-based, Center for American Progress (CAP) as its president and CEO, the policy think tank announced.
A longtime Democratic policy adviser, Tanden previously led CAP and its affiliated advocacy arm, the Center for American Progress Action Fund.
Tanden created history as the first Indian-American to lead any of the top White House advisory councils as President Joe Biden’s domestic policy adviser. She was responsible for overseeing the White House Domestic Policy Council and coordinating policy initiatives across economic, social, and governance issues.
Welcoming her appointment, CAP board chair John Podesta said, “This is a moment where the Center for American Progress is more important than ever. There is a competition of ideas in the country. And this time calls for both a strong critique of the Trump administration’s policies and the development of an alternative agenda to solve the country’s problems.”
Podesta credited CAP with shaping major policy initiatives, including the Affordable Care Act under President Barack Obama and climate investment strategies adopted by President Joe Biden. He expressed confidence in Tanden’s leadership, citing her experience in three White Houses and her role in defending the the Affordable Care Act (ACA) from repeal during the Trump administration.
Tanden said she is eager to return to CAP and contribute to policy development at a critical moment in U.S. politics. “I’m thrilled to join the Center for American Progress, with its talented leaders across multiple issues, at this critical moment in history.”
“As CAP has done before, it will develop an agenda to build a resilient coalition and take on the Trump administration’s assault on core American values and its harms to Americans from all walks of life,” Tanden added.
The Indian American has served in key roles in the Biden, Obama, and Clinton administrations and was a senior adviser in Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaigns. She holds a law degree from Yale and a bachelor’s degree from UCLA.
