Neeral Shah, a professor of medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, has been named a recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Faculty Award by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

Shah is one of 12 educators across the state recognized for exemplifying excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The award, supported by Dominion Energy, includes a $7,500 gift and will be presented during a ceremony on March 4, 2025, in Richmond.

An academic transplant hepatologist, Shah specializes in treating patients with liver disease and collaborates with biomedical engineers to develop innovative diagnostic techniques for bleeding disorders. He directs UVA’s Gastroenterology Fellowship Program and co-chairs the pre-clerkship curriculum, playing a pivotal role in shaping future medical professionals.

Shah is also the editor of Access Medicine and The Infographic Guide to Medicine, widely used in 98 percent of U.S. medical schools and in 70 countries globally. His contributions extend beyond UVA, influencing medical education worldwide.

A graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Shah holds bachelor’s degrees in chemical engineering and biomedical engineering, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to medicine.

The Outstanding Faculty Awards, established in 1987, celebrate educators in Virginia’s higher education institutions. This year, the program received 83 nominations, with winners selected through a rigorous process involving a panel of peers and a committee of leaders from the public and private sectors.
