A social media post by an Indian employee working for a UK-based company has sparked a debate on work culture and holiday policies between Indian and Western organizations.
The employee, Vivek Panchal, shared a message from his employer announcing a 15-day holiday break for Christmas and New Year, prompting widespread reactions online.
“Hello Vivek, from Monday it’s holidays till Jan.6, for Christmas and New Year,” read the message from his employer. Sharing the message on X (formerly Twitter), Vivek expressed his satisfaction with the extended break, writing, “Benefits of working in a UK-based company.”
The post quickly gained traction, with many users contrasting it with their own experiences of working in Indian companies.
One user commented, “Come to India, they will ask you to work even on Diwali, Holi, Christmas, Eid... the list is long.” Another noted, “I’m working in a Canadian-based company, and we do have Xmas holidays!” However, a contrasting perspective was shared by an Indian employee of a US-based firm who remarked, “US-based too, but Indians are working.”
Others highlighted more nuanced experiences. “Working in an Indian company, and yeah, got 8-day nice holidays. PS: few guys have extended it to proper 15 days,” wrote one user.
The debate has reignited discussions about the disparity in holiday policies, with many pointing out that Indian companies often prioritize work over cultural or religious holidays, even as global firms offer extended breaks.
While Vivek’s experience reflects the perks of working for a UK-based organization, it has also shed light on the challenges faced by Indian employees balancing work and festivals.
