At the 2024 commencement ceremony at West Virginia University (WVU), Honorary Degree recipient Nitin Kumbhani, encouraged the graduating class to never give up, emphasizing that there is only one path, and that is forward.
"Personal setbacks are unavoidable, but giving up is not an option. There is only one path, and that is forward," he said, advising graduates to view life as a marathon and avoid shortcuts.
Addressing over 1,000 graduates at the WVU Coliseum, the Indian American fintech executive, shared profound lessons from his life and career, urging the graduates to "dream big" and pursue their passions with unwavering determination. "For dreams to come true, develop passion, hunger, and follow it with hard work, discipline, dedication, and commitment," he said.
Awarding the degree, WVU president E. Gordon Gee praised Kumbhani’s contributions to global finance and technology, highlighting his innovative work in software and investment management. "Today, we are privileged to honor someone who has made invaluable contributions through hard work, vision, and compassion,” Gee said.
Kumbhani, originally from Mumbai, India, graduated from WVU in 1971 with a degree in electrical engineering. Reflecting on his journey, he credited the scholarship support he received at WVU as instrumental to his success.
In his speech, Kumbhani encouraged graduates to embrace humility and gratitude, stating, "Attitude over everything. Develop an attitude of gratitude. A little humility takes you a long way." He also shared his guiding principles, the "three E's": encourage, empower, and energize others. "They will lift you up," he said, underscoring the importance of collaboration and acknowledgment.
Encouraging entrepreneurship, he shared insights from his own ventures, including his pioneering firm Source Data Systems and Apex Capital Management. “If you get a chance, give entrepreneurship an opportunity. It will bring you a lot of satisfaction and most likely success,” he remarked, adding that despite setbacks, perseverance has been a cornerstone of his journey.
Closing his address, Kumbhani expressed pride in his alma mater, saying, "Be proud. I'm one of the proudest Mountaineer graduates of this school." He reaffirmed his commitment to WVU, thanking the university for shaping his path to success.
