Mark Carney, the frontrunner for Liberal Party leadership, and his fellow competitor Frank Baylis have yet to announce their candidacies for the 2025 federal elections, as the number of sitting members of the ruling party who are not seeking re-election is increasing.
Among those who have decided to give a pass to the 2025 elections include Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and three Cabinet Ministers of Indian descent. They are Minister of Transport and Internal Trade Anita Anand, Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada, Arif Virani, and Minister of Emergency Preparedness, Harjit Singh Sajjan. Overall, 32 Liberal MPs have announced they will not seek re-election.
These withdrawals notwithstanding, there is hardly any let up in the enthusiasm of political aspirants of Indian origin opting to contest the 2025 battle of the ballot as Liberal candidates.
Besides sitting MPs Anju Dhillon, Bardish Chagger, Chandra Arya (he was an aspirant for Liberal Party leadership), George Chahal, Iqwinder Singh Gaheer, Kamal Khera, Maninder Sidhu, Parm Bains, Randeep Serai, Ruby Sahota, Sonia Sidhu, and Sukh Dhaliwal, two new faces will be running for the first time as Liberal candidates in the 2025 federal elections.
They are Amandeep Sodhi from Brampton Centre and Rahul Walia from Winnipeg Centre.
The elections are due in October this year. There is, however, a strong possibility of its advancement in case all the three major Opposition parties – Conservatives, Bloc Quebecois and New Democrats – carry out their threat of bringing in a no-confidence motion after the prorogued House of Commons resumes its sitting on March 24 with a new Liberal PM in the saddle.
The minority ruling Liberals elect their new leader on March 9 to succeed Justin Trudeau.
