Nidhi Kadakia wins Yale ‘Global Health Spark Award’

Nidhi Kadakia, an instructor of emergency medicine at the Yale Institute for Global Health, was awarded the Fall 2024 Global Health Spark Award by the institute. The award, valued at up to $10,000, provides initial funding for innovative global health research initiatives.
Kadakia’s project focuses on improving the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals residing in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. This population of over 200,000 individuals notably faces significant health challenges, including hypertension, diabetes, chronic respiratory illness, and malnutrition.
The research will use retrospective chart reviews and patient focus groups to analyze epidemiological patterns, treatment efficacy, and barriers to effective care. Kadakia’s team, collaborating with the nonprofit organization Health and Education for All (HAEFA), aims to address critical obstacles in NCD management for this vulnerable community.
“This project will identify critical facilitators and barriers to effective NCD care in a humanitarian setting, providing a foundation for the development of tailored health interventions,” the university said in a statement.
“I am very grateful to receive this Spark Award, which will allow my colleagues from Health and Education for All (HAEFA) and I to uncover unique epidemiological patterns, treatment efficacy, and obstacles in non-communicable disease (NCD) management,” Kadakia said. “We expect this intervention to improve the quality of life of this vulnerable community and inform best practices for NCD management in this and other refugee and crisis contexts.”
The Spark Award recognizes projects based on innovativeness, feasibility, sustainability, and alignment of anticipated outcomes with the institute’s mission.
