Indian-origin professor Nikhil Gupta has been appointed to the editorial board of Scientific Data, a multidisciplinary journal published by Nature.
In his new editorial role, Gupta will oversee the peer review process for manuscripts related to materials science. Scientific Data operates under the FAIR Principles—ensuring data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable—essential for advancing scientific discovery.
Commenting on the role, Gupta said, "In particular, training AI models requires large datasets. Publications like this are now in great demand. I’m happy to have this role at a journal dedicated to breaking down barriers to interdisciplinary research. It’s a responsibility I take very seriously.”
A professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering, Gupta also serves in the Department of Civil and Urban Engineering, the NYU Center for Cybersecurity, and the Center for Advanced Technology in Telecommunications.
He is the director of Tandon’s Composite Materials and Mechanics Laboratory and a fellow of both ASM International and the American Society for Composites. Additionally, he is a senior member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the National Academy of Inventors.
Gupta's research includes enhancing additive manufacturing monitoring and improving biomedical hydrogels' clinical effectiveness. He has degrees from Malaviya National Institute of Technology, the Indian Institute of Science, and a doctorate from Louisiana State University.
