Ohio State Senator Niraj Antani (R-Miamisburg) concluded his term in the Senate, marking the end of a decade-long career in the Ohio General Assembly.
Antani, who began his political journey as a 23-year-old State Representative in 2014, served six years in the Ohio House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 2020.
Antani created history as the first Indian and Hindu American to serve as a State Senator in Ohio and remains the youngest Hindu and Indian American state or federal elected official in U.S. history.
Reflecting on his tenure, Antani stated, “It has been the privilege of my life to serve the community in which I was born and raised in the Ohio General Assembly for the past decade. I have worked hard every day over the last decade to give every Ohioan the ability to achieve their American Dream.”
Antani highlighted his legislative achievements, including securing increased funding for Ohio’s community colleges, advancing workforce development in the Dayton region, and enacting tax exemptions that preserved the Miamisburg Mound business park. His efforts also brought millions in state capital budget funding to regional institutions like Dayton Art Institute and the Boonshoft Museum.
Known for his legislative skills, Antani authored Ohio's law granting name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights to college athletes, a precedent that influenced National Collegiate Athletics Association policy nationwide. He also spearheaded legislation ensuring public access to police body camera footage, enhancing transparency and accountability.
Antani's leadership extended beyond legislation. He served as vice-chair of the Senate Health Committee and held prominent roles in the House, including vice-chair of the Rules and Insurance Committees. In 2020, he managed the campaign to elect Speaker Bob Cupp amidst the fallout of Ohio's largest corruption scandal.
Looking to the future, the 33-year-old lawmaker said he plans to announce his next steps soon.
